How Do I Get Started Volunteering?

Fostering is one of the most important and rewarding volunteering opportunities in our organization. Volunteer fosters take a cat or dog into their home and teach them how to live as part of a loving family. UAF pays for all veterinary expenses and can provide food and transportation. Our foster parents provide a critical service by getting to know each animal as an individual, so they can help make the perfect matches between pets and people.

Adoption Event Handlers
UAF holds weekend adoption events at various locations throughout the year. Volunteer handlers keep the animals safe and calm during these events and answer questions from potential adopters.

Volunteers are needed at times to transport an animal to and from veterinary appointments, grooming appointments or adoption events. Transporters may also pick up and deliver pet food, equipment or donated items.   UAF will reimburse for mileage.

Fundraising Activities
UAF holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including Woof Down Lunch, Barks n Beers, Rummage to the Rescues Rummage Sale, along with several bake sales, dog washes and pet photo sessions. Volunteers make them successful by helping to line up sponsors and vendors, seeking rummage sale and raffle donations, providing baked goods, organizing and planning, distributing flyers and posters, and helping to set up for and clean up after events.

Telephone Volunteers
United Animal Friends has no facility, so calls go to a voice mail service, where they are retrieved by telephone volunteers. Each volunteer chooses one or two days a week to dial into the service, listen to the messages, and either return the call or forward the information to the appropriate party.
